SpinTunes 12 - Song Writing Contest - Round 3

SpinTunes 12 - Round 3:

Something Old, Something Knant - Create a new word, and write a song using it prominently. It can't be a proper noun. Your song must also use borrowed chords.

The night of December 21st, 2015 I had the most vivid dream in which I became completely lucid. I looked down at my hands and my right index finger was missing at the first knuckle. When I raised my head I saw a creature covered in feathers but with a lion’s head. It repeated over and over to me oblagetauta agmepulot. Light like that of an intense fire rose from all around as the chanting came to a climax. Recalling the experience chills me to this day. The next morning I promptly wrote the dream down in my journal and began Google searching the words in as many spelling variations as I could come up with, but found nothing concrete. After reading about this challenge, these words immediately came back to me. I mentioned this all to my wife and she suggested breaking it down using a Dictionary of Words Roots which I wasn’t aware sat on our book shelves. So I did.

ob = Against (Latin)
la = The People (Germanic)
ge = The Earth (Germanic)
taut = The Same (Germanic)
a = Not Without, but Together (Germanic)

agm = A Fracture, Fragment (G); A Stream (L)
epulot = Healing; A Scar (G)

My ultimate take away from the experience of the dream mixed with the vagueness of the above translations is represented in this song. “Without Human Can Earth Survive?” is an idea I found in the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. There is no way to tell if the author means “If humans are not around to harm Earth, would that give Earth a chance to survive” or “If humans are not there to save Earth, will it be able to survive.” To me it comes down to understanding a situation, discontinuing pointing at others to blame, and taking personal responsibility to act as a true care giver for that which we each truly care about each and every day.

Lyrics:

oblagetauta agmepulot
Without human can Earth survive?

We are made from the same star stuff.
We are one with each other and one with the Earth.
When we disrespect each other and disrespect our mother we always end up hurting the ONE that is US.

oblagetauta agmepulot
Without human can Earth survive?

With a world made for living and breathing we are all alone together on this tiny, little speck of dust.
Can we learn that endless growth is unsustainable?
Can we heal our fractured Gaia and heal the ONE that is US?

The water’s rising quickly and there’s no life boat in sight…

oblagetauta agmepulot
Without human can Earth survive?

------
The key is Db minor. I use a borrowed Major V and a borrowed minor vi in during the bridge.

SpinTunes 12 - Song Writing Contest - Round 2

SpinTunes #12: Round 2 Challenge

Car-aoke - Write a quintessential road trip song.

Background info on my song:

While driving to work I often catch myself entertaining the idea of simply not going to work and just continuing to drive to wherever. This song represents the essence and fleeting whimsy of such a daydream. I am the sole performer and audio engineer.

Lyrics:
Can't shake the feeling
I get it every morning
Don't wanna go to work
Today

Instead I'll drive
Toward the horizon
For endless miles and miles
Today

Open road
Take me away
Open Road
Take me away
Take me away

Can't shake the feeling
I get every morning
Don't wanna go to work
Today

Instead I'll drive
Toward the horizon
For endless miles and miles
Today

Open road
Take me away
Open Road
Take me away

You've always felt more like a home to me anyway...

Open road
Take me away
Open Road
Take me away

SpinTunes 12 - Song Writing Contest - Round 1

I joined a songwriting contest!

SpinTunes #12: Round 1 Challenge

Party Mix - Write a song from the point of view of someone who just won or lost an election.  It could be a recent election, one from the past, or even a fictional one.  It doesn't even have to be political.

Background Info on my Song:

I've been watching a lot of the show Reign lately which got me thinking about how (in a way) kings are "elected" to rule by a system that society created long before they were born. It also made me think about how when a king takes the throne it means that his parents (or at least his father) had to have recently died which makes it also a very sad time, but he must do what needs to be done regardless.

I had a ton of fun with this challenge; I used an a-symmetric song design to keep the drama very linear. I'm the sole performer on this track and also did the engineering, mixing, and mastering.

Lyrics:

Taken by death too soon
My father lies in his tomb
Cold and at peace in her shroud
I'll do my mother proud

Coursing through my veins
Is a liquid made to reign
Destine to rule from birth
A godsend to this Earth

Royal blood lives in me
Royal blood lives in me
Royal blood lives in me
But royal blood ain't all that turns a man into a king!

Royal blood don't make a leader
Won't make you strong
Can't guide your conscience
To right from wrong
But in this country's hour of need
I'll be exactly who you need me to be

I'll be your king
I'll be your king
I'll be your king
I'll be your king

With royal blood
This royal blood
My royal blood

Global Game Jam 2017 - GlitchCraft

Last weekend I had the pleasure of working with two great teams on a couple video games as part of the 48 hour Global Game Jam. Over 70,000 people participate in the jam each year in over 90 different countries at 700+ jam sites around the world. Our jam site, GlitchCraft, made 31 games this year, all of which can be downloaded for free here:

http://globalgamejam.org/2017/jam-sites/gamecraft-university-minnesota-twin-cities-2017/games

Here is the music I created over the weekend.

Circuit Breakers:
Tesla and Edison square off to see who's version of the Tesla coil is stronger. Head to Head Puzzle action!

Super Sumo Ball:
You're a sumo, trapped in a giant hamster ball! Knock the ball out of the stage to score points. Make sure to be the last one to get a hit though, as someone else can steal your points!

Enjoy!

Hope to see you again soon,

Bryan
